TENERIFE, 19 September (EUROPA PRESS) –
The Chief Executive of the Canary Islands, Fernando Clavijo, stated on Thursday that the Canary Islands serve as “a support and a barrier for all migration from Africa.”
This declaration was made during the inaugural session of the II Meeting of the Conference of Ministers of Justice of Ibero-American Nations (COMJIB) alongside the Conference of Ministers of Justice of Portuguese-Speaking Nations (CMJPLOP). The event was attended by King Felipe VI and the Minister of the Presidency, Justice and Relations with the Parliament, Félix Bolaños.
In his address, Clavijo emphasised that the Canary Islands have historically acted as “a bridge between the old continent and America and Africa.” “Our narrative is characterised by being a place of transit, as well as a destination,” he remarked.
He further articulated that the Canary Islands are currently undergoing “an unparalleled migration crisis” that has transformed this autonomous community into “the support and containment barrier for all migration from Africa.” “The Canary Islands, and the Canarian people, reflect a vision in which any region in the world can examine itself,” he noted.
