The President of the Canary Islands Parliament, Astrid Pérez, has emphasised this Wednesday the “unique bond” of King Felipe VI with the Canary Islands and his “enduring dedication” to the archipelago, which includes over fifty official engagements during his ten years of reign.
“The independence and impartiality of the Crown have played a significant role in the stability of our democracy and, a decade after the start of Don Felipe VI’s reign, we firmly believe that the monarchy continues to offer an essential service to our nation,” stated the president in a declaration regarding the presentation ceremony, scheduled for this Thursday, of the Gold Medal of Parliament.
Pérez, who received the unanimous backing of the Board on June 20 for her proposal to award this honour, indicated that the primary officials of the Canary Islands will welcome the monarch in Parliament “in an event that will be a grand homage from this land to its King.”
She announced that the deputies, members of the Chamber’s Board, and spokespersons of the parliamentary groups will be present, alongside the president and vice president of the Canary Islands, members of the regional administration, former presidents of the archipelago, and past presidents of Parliament.
She also mentioned that “we will be joined by the leaders of the island councils, representatives from the central government, and many other civil and military dignitaries. It will be a momentous occasion that will express our gratitude to His Majesty for the vital contributions he makes for Spain and the Canary Islands.”
She concluded that “it will be a privilege and a source of pride” to present Felipe VI with “the highest accolade of the Parliament of the Canary Islands”.
As per the regulations governing the awarding of the Medal of the Parliament of the Canary Islands, established on October 17, 2006, this honour was created “to acknowledge individuals or institutions and groups that, having excelled in their service to this Parliament or to the Autonomous Community at large, merit, in the opinion of Parliament, honorary recognition.”
It is also stated that it may be awarded to institutions, authorities, and individuals who, due to their special connection or association with the Parliament of the Canary Islands or for reasons of reciprocity or courtesy, are deemed deserving of such recognition.
