Canary Islands Designate Ateneo de La Laguna as a Site of Public Significance

The Government Council has sanctioned the decree that recognises the Ateneo de La Laguna Association as being of public significance to the Canary Islands, following a proposal from the Minister of the Presidency, Public Administrations, Justice, and Security, Nieves Lady Barreto. This recognition is based on the premise that its statutory aims are inclined towards advancing the common good of the autonomous community, alongside the advantages its operations offer to Canarian society.

Among its social objectives, the Ateneo de La Laguna aims to promote and enhance culture in all its dimensions and expressions. This encompasses the facilitation and safeguarding of both public and private initiatives, in addition to nurturing public opinion and fostering continuous discourse on matters pertaining to the scientific, artistic, and humanistic sectors, along with any other human endeavours that relate, directly or indirectly, to its aims. The association is committed to diligent, altruistic service, detached from any ideological affiliations, and operates in the interests of the Canary Islands with a foundation of respect, independence, and tolerance.

The reports presented indicate that 48 cultural events were conducted in 2022, and a total of 80 were held in 2023, which included art exhibitions, music and performing arts shows, literature and theatre presentations, audiovisual screenings, and humanities and science activities, along with an art festival.

The Ateneo de La Laguna Association has been officially recorded since 1966 in the Registry of Associations of the Canary Islands under the identifier G1/S1/11483-66/TF, with its operational jurisdiction being the Autonomous Community of the Canary Islands. The association submitted its application requesting a declaration of public interest on March 7, 2024.

In line with other public interest declarations within the Canary Islands, it has been established that its activities are not solely confined to its members; the representatives receiving remuneration do not do so with funds derived from public subsidies, and that they possess adequate material and personnel resources to ensure adherence to the goals set forth in their statutes. Moreover, the association has evidenced that it has been actively functioning and undertaking activities continuously for a minimum of two years prior to the application submission.
