SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, 15 Sep. (EUROPA PRESS) –
The Civil Guard has apprehended two members of a local police force in a municipality on the island of Tenerife for an alleged offence of misappropriating public funds by reportedly taking money from fines imposed on foreign offenders not residing in the islands.
According to the Civil Guard, as part of Operation Mártir, agents from the Organic Unit of Judicial Police (UOPJ) of the Santa Cruz de Tenerife Command, in collaboration with the Traffic Accident Investigation Group (GIAT) of the Canary Islands Traffic Sector, initiated an inquiry over four months ago after discovering suspected irregularities in the actions of these local police officers.
The investigations were conducted in a discreet and confidential manner to identify the reported irregularities, which subsequently led to a focus on the officers now under arrest, confirming the existence of criminal activities.
After compiling all the necessary evidence, the Civil Guard detained the two officers, executing several searches and acquiring numerous significant documents.
This not only validated the findings of the investigation but also suggested that the illegal activities had been ongoing for many years.
Furthermore, several tens of thousands of euros were confiscated, in addition to hundreds of complaint forms issued to foreign individuals that had not been processed, along with other items related to the investigated crimes.
Ultimately, the investigation has been overseen by the Judicial Authority and the Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office of the Provincial Court, with the Judicial Authority directing the imprisonment of both detainees.
