La Laguna Celebrates Fiestas del Cristo 2024: A Spectacular Showcase of Culture

This Saturday, La Laguna hosted the principal events of the main day of the Fiestas del Santísimo Cristo, which commemorates the traditional return of the image of the crucified Christ from the interior of the Cathedral to its Royal Sanctuary. The day unfolded smoothly and drew hundreds of attendees to the historic centre, both for the Eucharistic celebration and the return procession, as reported by the City Council.

The scheduled events commenced at 10:15 with a civil-military procession and the transfer of the royal standard from the Town Hall to the Cathedral, attended by various civil, military and consular dignitaries. On this occasion, the president of the Parliament of the Canary Islands, Astrid Pérez, represented the Royal House.

Other officials including the deputy government delegate in the Canary Islands, Javier Plata, and the president of the Cabildo of Tenerife, Rosa Dávila, were also present, alongside a significant representation from the City Council of La Laguna and other island institutions. Following the celebration of the solemn Eucharist, the return procession took place, transporting the Christ of La Laguna from the Cathedral to its historic sanctuary.

Saturday’s events culminated in the celebration of Heritage Night and a procession of the revered image of Christ through the main thoroughfares of the city, concluding with its return to the square, where the customary fireworks display began at 11:30 p.m. The festivities concluded with the “megaverbenazo” of Christ, featuring performances by El Morocho y la Gran Orquesta, Virginia Guantanamera, and The Boys Machine.

The Mayor of La Laguna, Luis Yeray Gutiérrez, emphasised “the significance and emotion that this day holds for the inhabitants of La Laguna”. “Each one of us, whether we hold religious beliefs or not, cherish fond memories associated with this 14th of September from our childhood, strolling with family through the city’s streets while admiring our revered image on its iconic journey to the Plaza del Cristo,” the mayor reminisced.
