SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, 13 Sep. (EUROPA PRESS) –
King Felipe VI is set to receive the Gold Medal of the Parliament of the Canary Islands on Thursday, 19 September at 10:00 a.m.
The Speaker of the House, Astrid Pérez, will present the highest accolade of Parliament to Felipe VI, describing it as “a historic event that embodies gratitude and a collective commitment to the monarchy, an institution that signifies the Spanish nation.”
Astrid Pérez, the advocate for this honour, mentions that “the Board of the Parliament of the Canary Islands reached a unanimous decision on Thursday, June 20, to grant this Gold Medal to His Majesty King Felipe VI.”
In this context, the statement notes that “the warmth and esteem from the archipelago towards the Royal House reflects a reciprocal connection that this House seeks to reaffirm through this award, which serves to strengthen the enduring relationship that links the Crown with the Canary Islands.”
The Speaker added that “in his initial decade of rule, Felipe VI has consistently demonstrated his devotion to democracy in our nation and his profound sensitivity, particularly towards the Canary Islands and our Parliament, to which he presented the first Gold Medal of the Royal Canary Academy of Fine Arts on 7 October 2021.”
The Speaker further highlighted that “during his first ten years on the throne, Felipe VI has provided significant evidence of empathy and support for the Canary Islands, especially during challenging times such as the volcanic eruption in La Palma, the wildfires in Gran Canaria and Tenerife, or the Covid-19 pandemic, not forgetting his continuous involvement in socially and culturally significant events.”
In accordance with the regulations governing the awarding of the Medal of the Parliament of the Canary Islands, established on 17 October 2006, this honour was created “to recognise personalities, institutions, and groups that, through their distinguished service to this Parliament or to the Autonomous Community, deserve honorary recognition in the opinion of Parliament. Additionally, it may be awarded to entities, officials, and individuals who, due to their special affiliation with the Parliament of the Canary Islands or for reasons of reciprocity or courtesy, have earned this accolade.”
