SAN SEBASTIAN DE LA GOMERA, 7 Sep. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The head of the Cabildo of La Gomera, Casimiro Curbelo, has urged that “Canarian solidarity” be upheld to effectively tackle the migration crisis currently affecting the archipelago.

This assertion was made during his address at the institutional gathering of the Jornadas Colombinas, where he elaborated on the critical circumstances facing the care and reception services present on the islands.

Curbelo once again emphasised the necessity of bolstering resources and stressed the pressing need for a response from Europe to confront this situation.

“We have often faced this challenging task in isolation, striving to rescue them, provide them shelter, and deliver medical assistance. We have managed with our own resources, which are now overwhelmed,” he cautioned, voicing his concerns over the repeated appeals for support from Europe, which he characterised as “a sluggish administration suffering from indifference.”

In this context, he acknowledged the efforts made in the Canary Islands and asserted that the response to African migration “cannot be the sole responsibility of an autonomous community, or even a single nation; it must be a collective resolution.”

Additionally, Curbelo urged the president of the Canary Islands to remain steadfast in his efforts to preserve unity and respond to this “humanitarian crisis.”

Lastly, he called for amendments to the Immigration Law and advocated for “the application of common sense in politics to resolve the predicament faced by nearly 6,000 children under our care on the islands, for whom no one else is willing to assist.”
