Approximately twenty artisans are showcasing their creations from today and throughout tomorrow, Sunday, at the Camino Largo Castle in the heart of La Laguna. “From jewellery and leather products to linen weaving, rose crafting, textile embellishment, feltwork and macramé, among other items,” remarked the Councillor for Local Development of La Laguna City Council, Domingo Galván, during his tour of the various stalls.
Galván elaborated that “we aimed to promote this event, capitalising on the considerable influx of visitors that the city attracts during these holidays, thereby providing new economic opportunities for the sector.” Thus, “throughout the weekend, both residents and visitors will have the chance to experience a genuine immersion in our local customs and culture,” emphasised the councillor, who highlighted the significance of supporting the sector and preserving these traditions, “which create employment, foster entrepreneurship, and provide a sustainable alternative to mass-produced goods.”
“Thanks to the commitment and craftsmanship of our artisans, these traditions remain vibrant, enabling them to be handed down through the generations. These skills not only define our identity, but also serve as a valuable economic resource, and we are devoted to ensuring their longevity,” he stated.
Today, until 8:00 pm, attendees can partake in various activities, with a notable workshop this afternoon focusing on ‘Old Canarian Potatoes’, which includes tastings. Furthermore, this afternoon, children can engage in a creative workshop on ‘Fire Lanterns’, as well as a hands-on session on ‘Club Fighting’, hosted by the Federation of Club Fighting.
Tomorrow, Sunday 8 September, the exhibition will reopen from 11:00 am to 8:00 pm. The day will be enhanced by a workshop on traditional attire entitled ‘Vestirse de pies hasta la cabeza’, running from 4:30 to 5:30 pm, and a children’s drawing and craft workshop themed around ‘Fireworks’, scheduled from 5:00 to 6:00 pm.
Between 5:00 and 7:00 pm, there will be a public session of ‘Lucha del Garrote’, and from 6:00 to 8:00 pm, attendees may also participate in a workshop introducing ‘Approaching the Silbo Gomero’, led by the Silbo Gomero Cultural Association.
Galván invited everyone to visit this venue “to explore the richness of local artisanal crafts and partake in the activities, workshops, and demonstrations prepared for this occasion.” “A festive environment characterised by reverence for traditions, where one can learn about, appreciate, and help protect the cultural heritage that defines us as a community,” he concluded.
