SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, 3 Sep. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The Tenerife Island Council has awarded the contract for the renovation of the Benijos warehouses in the municipality of La Orotava. This initiative aims to adapt these facilities for the reception, processing, storage, and distribution of potatoes in Tenerife, particularly on the northern slope.

The objective of the project is to address the existing issues in the current structures, which are evident through cracks, shifting facades, detached cladding, and water infiltration. This will involve actions such as repairing the cladding, plastering walls, refurbishing the interior finishes, and waterproofing, among other tasks.

The Minister for the Primary Sector, Valentín González, stated in a press release that the contract will be assigned to the company Proyectos Simeón GH. SLU, for an amount of 641,642.62 euros and an execution timeframe of 9 months.

González further explained that this initiative marks the first step in a broader plan devised by the Cabildo aimed at comprehensive rehabilitation of these facilities, responding to a long-standing request from farmers in the northern region of the island to enhance their competitiveness in the market. Potato farming in the north holds significant economic significance, deeply intertwined with the region’s traditions and culture.

The Cabildo intends to invest nearly 2 million euros into the execution of three projects, which include the rehabilitation of the warehouses for the reception, processing, storage, and marketing of potatoes, the renovation of cold storage facilities, and the upgrade of the low voltage electrical installation and unification of supplies for the Benijos agro-industrial complex.

Additionally, the Council will advance projects for the refurbishment of the cold storage facilities (1,099,856.62 euros) and the renovation of the electrical system (93,463.23 euros).

“We aspire to equip this infrastructure with facilities that ensure efficient and sustainable use, while also providing farmers with an appropriate location to store their potato harvest, granting them greater leverage in negotiating sales and marketing of local potato production,” he stated.
