SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, 2 Sep. (EUROPA PRESS) –
The Tenerife Island Council has granted the contract for the establishment of a recycling centre in La Laguna, specifically in Los Rodeos, to the company Obras Desarrollos y Asfaltos SL for a sum of 723,320 euros, with a targeted completion period of eight months.
This initiative is financed through the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan, which is supported by the European Union’s NextGenerationEU programme.
Blanca Pérez, the Minister for the Environment, Sustainability, Security and Emergencies, states in a statement that “clean points are crucial for the effective management of domestic waste.”
By properly segregating waste, she adds, “we enable subsequent recycling and reuse, thus closing the material’s life cycle and preventing environmental contamination.”
Pérez further highlights that “the recycling centres are free to use, and since the start of this year, we have extended the operating hours of the eight recycling facilities we currently have to facilitate the disposal of waste by citizens.”
She emphasised, “we are also working towards the establishment of an additional eight locations, including Los Rodeos.”
Alejandro Molowny, the island’s director of Waste, elaborates that enhancements have recently been implemented at five of the eight existing points, and now, the centre in Los Rodeos has been selected for upgrades, which will encourage recycling in that area.
“Our objective is to establish 16 recycling centres in the medium term to support recycling efforts across the island. Waste should be regarded as a valuable resource and a means of generating wealth,” he articulates.
The developments at the new recycling facility will involve constructing a perimeter fence, setting up user information and monitoring stations, an elevated platform for various containers assigned for specific waste types, a lower platform to assist in the removal of larger containers, a covered area for the protection of hazardous materials or substances, containers of diverse shapes and sizes for different waste types, horizontal signage marked on the pavement, and vertical signage consisting of informational signs intended to guide users in accessing and optimally utilising the facilities.
Currently, Tenerife features eight clean points, which are located in Jagua (Santa Cruz), Torres de Taco (La Laguna), Güímar, Adeje, Buenavista del Norte, La Guancha, La Orotava, and Arona.
The Natural Environment, Sustainability, Safety, and Emergencies department is actively working on establishing eight new clean points in Arico, Los Rodeos (La Laguna), Fasnia, Granadilla, Las Chafiras (San Miguel), Vilaflor, Guía de Isora, and Tegueste.
To facilitate waste disposal at recycling centres, the Tenerife Island Council has extended the operation hours since January of this year.
The recycling centres are open on Mondays from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.; Tuesday to Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.; Saturdays from 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.; and Sundays from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.
