For a decade, Reggae Can Festival has been a cornerstone in the promotion of music and reggae culture in the Canary Islands, and this year will be no different, thanks to the backing of the Festivals Department of the San Cristóbal de La Laguna City Council, the ICDC (Canarian Institute of Cultural Development), and the Cabildo of Tenerife.
Morodo & Okumé Lions
Morodo stands as one of the foremost figures of reggae in Spanish, boasting five studio albums and a multitude of collaborations, while Dubplates ranks among the pioneering Singjays in Spain and has possibly had the most significant influence on a new wave of artists in the genre. With more than 20 years of performing, he is a living testament to reggae music’s evolution.
Ruts & La Isla Music: “Marley Lives”
Ruts & La Isla Music, regarded as one of the most prominent reggae artists in the Canary Islands, introduces “Marley Vive”, a performance in which she passionately interprets Bob Marley’s timeless hits. Featuring a lineup with a brass section and a percussion ensemble inspired by the sounds of The Wailers, the concert promises to be both dynamic and refined, enhanced by intricately crafted lighting, audio, and visuals. The objective is to encapsulate Bob Marley’s most recognised, deep, and enduring sentiment: “ONE LOVE”.
Payoh Soulrebel & The Rootskank
Payoh Soul Rebel, hailing from Madrid and currently residing in Valencia, is perhaps one of the finest voices in the Afro-American music scene in Spain. He represents the soul and roots tradition, echoing the styles of Al Green or Alton Ellis through his tone, expressiveness, and versatility. Joined by The Rootskank (Michael Prophet, Al Campbell, Hermano L…), they offer a journey through soulful reggae, traversing rub a’ dub and rocksteady in a performance that is bound to give you goosebumps.
Javadub (Lava Sound)
Javadub is amongst the most active DJs on the Jamaican music scene within the Canary Islands. He established Lava Sound in 2011 and has been a member of El Veneno Crew since 2003, participating in numerous festivals and promoting different initiatives throughout the years.
Currently, he holds a regular residency at El Rincón de Tintín with “Jaleo Party”, an event that unites enthusiasts of Reggae, Dancehall, Afrobeats, and other unique sounds during his sessions.
ACTIVITIES
The activities will commence at 4:00 p.m. and continue until 6:00 p.m. with the ‘Reggae Groove’ Masterclass focusing on bass and drums within Jamaican music, conducted by Reggae School Madrid at Aguere Music Store in San Cristóbal de La Laguna.
Additionally, from 4:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., attendees can explore the photographic exhibition ’10 years with you’ by Jose Barrera at the Plaza del Adelantado, all under the “Reggae Can Lab” initiative.
Simultaneously, through the Department of the Environment of the La Laguna City Council, there will be a stand promoting awareness and environmental consciousness entitled “Unstoppable Movement”, as part of the “Rompen las olas” program.
