SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, 29 Aug (EUROPA PRESS) –

The Labour Inspectorate in Santa Cruz de Tenerife has issued a reminder to the tram operator Metropolitano de Tenerife, urging them to implement essential measures to safeguard workers handling switches within the tunnels from the risks of inhaling silica dust.

This information is provided in a statement by the Workers’ Commissions (CCOO), which highlights that the timeframe for rectifying this situation is “immediate,” and its execution must be adequately justified within a maximum of one week.

The inspection specifies that in the absence of alternative organisational strategies for controlling the atmosphere within the tunnels, the required measures will include the provision of necessary personal protective equipment, as indicated by the Federation of Citizen Services of the Canary Islands Workers’ Commissions, according to the union.

Given that the handling of tools within the tunnels is unpredictable and unprogrammable, the Inspectorate mandates that each tram cabin must be equipped with the essential protective resources that workers should utilise in each situation as required.

Furthermore, it emphasises the importance of training affected workers on the correct use of personal protective equipment and any other relevant measures for the successful implementation of these protocols.

It also requires that workers receive guidance on how to appropriately dispose of or store the protective equipment used, with the necessary resources available as per each circumstance.
