Notices Diary/Rodrigo Padilla.| Adeje City Council has reopened La Pinta beach after it was temporarily closed for two days due to the discovery of bacteria of the “short-lived enterococci 310” variety in daily water quality assessments.

As reported by this newspaper, the results from tests conducted on Friday morning in the popular bathing spot of Puerto Colón were negative. Therefore, the condition of the water is not deemed hazardous to the health of swimmers.

WHAT ARE ENTEROCOCCI?

Enterococci are bacteria that, while naturally occurring in the intestines of both humans and animals, indicate the presence of faecal contamination when detected in water. This suggests that the water may be tainted with microorganisms that could be potentially harmful to health, particularly for those who come into contact with it.

Exposure to these bacteria can lead to infections of the skin, eyes, and respiratory tract, as well as urinary and gastrointestinal issues.

Regarding the source of the contamination, the sources consulted have ruled out any malfunction in municipal installations. “The investigation into the cause is ongoing. We have indications that suggest the swell this week may have led to a minor discharge from an island pumping station or even an accidental release from a vessel at anchor.”
