A cayuco carrying 59 sub-Saharan migrants was rescued late on Saturday afternoon by Maritime Rescue in waters off the coast of Tenerife after the whale-watching vessel ‘Efiel’ reported the sighting of a small craft three miles from the beach at San Juan.
According to the national agency, the Alpheratz lifeboat was deployed and while en route to the area, the Civil Guard maintained updates on the boat’s location.
Upon arrival, the rescue crew located the vessel, which was discovered to be a motorless canoe, and they proceeded to assist the 59 individuals on board, comprising 55 men and four women.
Once they reached Los Cristianos Pier, a team from the Red Cross and the Canary Islands Emergency Service (SUC) provided care for the migrants, with two of them being taken to health facilities for various medical conditions.
