The local authorities in Puerto de la Cruz have removed a council member from the debate regarding the motion of censure against the mayor, Marco González (PSOE), due to repeated disruptions during the plenary session.
Leopoldo Afonso (PP) has been appointed as the new mayor of Puerto de la Cruz following the motion of censure presented by the popular, Canarian Coalition, and Portuense Citizen Assembly against Marco González (PSOE). This marks the third such occurrence in the history of the municipal corporation and the decision was made after a debate held at the Port City Hall from 12:00 onwards.
In his address during the plenary session, González assured the new mayor that his party would provide constructive opposition and pledged not to support right-wing forces in the city.
Leopoldo Afonso, who is the brother of the vice president of the Cabildo of Tenerife and former mayor of Puerto de la Cruz, Lope Afonso, is the spokesperson for the PP’s municipal group. He assumes the mayoral position with the support of ACP and CC, with the outcome of the 2027 elections anticipated to potentially favour the PSOE once again.
