The Town Hall of Candelaria is finalising the preparations for the celebrations in honour of the Patron Saint of the Canary Islands. This festivity, steeped in history, holds profound significance for the town and has strong ties to the Guanche world. The festivities primarily take place in the basilica and the square dedicated to the Patron Saint of the Canary Islands, with extensions to the surrounding streets, spaces, and even the pilgrimage routes across the Island, attracting pilgrims from all corners. The main events of the celebration will kick off today, following the starting signal on August 8, with the proclamation by Casimiro Curbelo, the President of the Cabildo of La Gomera. DIARIO DE AVISOS had a conversation with Mari Brito, the mayor of Candelaria. With over 100,000 visitors expected to flock to the basilica and its vicinity, the mayor, in her ninth year overseeing the festivities of the Marian Villa, expresses satisfaction while also calling for more support from institutions and heightened involvement. She stresses the importance, stating, “We take on the responsibility, but it’s crucial not to overlook that this is the Patron Saint of the Canary Islands.” The mayor emphasises civil responsibility during the pilgrimage, considering the anticipated heat. She boldly asserts what many Canarians believe, declaring, “Undoubtedly, the celebrations of the Patron Saint of the Canary Islands are the most outstanding Marian commemorations in Spain.”

-Your personal experience leading up to these festivities?
“These celebrations are deeply emotional for me, both as a resident and as the mayor. As a resident of Candelaria, I have had a profound and close connection to these festivities. I have been actively involved in organising these celebrations in a civic capacity, and now, as the mayor, I bear the responsibility of coordinating and directly liaising with the Dominican friars. The main events have been meticulously planned in advance over several months. These festivities should highlight the regional significance of this celebration. Once again this year, there will be new elements in the events. We have curated the programme with a deep respect for the sentiments held by each individual, recognising the importance of these festivities. Preserving them is imperative, with a particular focus on culture, music, and art.”

-Your aim to expand the festivities to encompass the entire Archipelago. Have you made progress towards achieving this goal?
“I would say yes. Bringing the figure of the Virgin closer to symbolise unity among the Canary Islands is tremendously significant. This is the homeland of the Canarians, and we want every corner of the Islands to embrace this celebration intimately. All pilgrims visit us in a remarkable manner, and this sense is palpable; they share their devotion with us. This year holds special significance. We observe, as we do every year, that the Virgin of Candelaria transcends beyond the municipality. In this edition, we are taking a step further: for instance, following an initiative crafted in 2021 and with the representation of the consul of Peru, we will establish a twinning with the Peruvian community. The festival of Candelaria is recognised as cultural heritage in Peru, signifying a significant festival for many. The number of devotees worldwide increases each year, with a rising number of visitors every weekend. The palpable respect and care for the elements of the festival are evident to us. It is a celebration of the Canarian identity.”

-Your critique of the lack of involvement from other administrations in this extensive regional festival. Your thoughts?
“We shoulder the responsibility, but it must not be forgotten that this is the Patron Saint of the Canary Islands. We receive considerable support from the institutions, but indeed, when it comes to overseeing these celebrations, our capabilities are limited. Certain aspects, such as security, financing, and law enforcement, among others, are not entirely within our control. While our administration receives a subsidy of 12,000 Euros from the Government of the Canary Islands, the total direct and indirect expenses of these festivities reach 300,000 Euros. Candelaria exerts a substantial effort, and this figure ought to be increased, among other things.”

-What advice do you have for pilgrims travelling to Candelaria?
“We urge all pilgrims to uphold collective responsibility, both in selecting routes and navigating the roads. It is crucial to heed any notifications that may be disseminated by the city council in case of developments. This year, it appears that the weather will be favourable, but caution must be exercised. The municipal administration must be vigilant in the face of any potential eventualities. We recommend avoiding peak sun hours and always carrying water. Additionally, there may be disruptions in traffic, so the use of public transport is advised.”

-Is the feast of Candelaria one of the most significant Marian festivals in Spain?
“I would say that these are the finest Marian festivities in Spain. I have not had the opportunity to witness them elsewhere, yet the regional essence of the celebrations and the heartfelt manner in which they are observed, coupled with the messages from Canarians around the world, underscore their importance. The festival of Candelaria transcends borders. To me, it is the most significant, undoubtedly. Its prominence grows each year. We must cherish and safeguard this place and this commemoration, ensuring that every visitor finds solace in what they encounter here. Unquestionably, yes, I would assert that it is the most exceptional and remarkable.”

-A month after the incident of defamatory graffiti aimed at you, there have been similar attacks on other mayors, such as the one from Icod de los Vinos. Do you view this trend as perilous?
“Indeed, I believe that this should not become the norm. Such behaviours are entirely reprehensible. I am grateful for the support of numerous individuals who have shared their messages with me; I had not done so previously, and this has provided me with much energy, although I must admit that these were challenging days. These messages were near my residence, and the crossing of certain boundaries is becoming increasingly concerning, particularly if they are repeated. It is essential for the media to continue their responsibility in seeking the truth and portraying situations as they are. We are reaching a point where we are losing our way, and this kind of trend should not be accepted. It is highly risky and does not foster the coexistence, peace, and empathy essential in any environment.”
