This Friday, 16th August, Garachico is getting ready to host one of the most iconic pilgrimages in Tenerife: the celebration of San Roque. From the early hours of the morning, the traditional sounds of ajijides and tajarastes, accompanied by the vibrant ribbons and the arrival of pilgrims, will announce the commencement of the festivity.
At 9.30 a.m., the pilgrims’ mass will take place at the hermitage of San Roque, marking the beginning of the religious activities. Following the service, the procession, accompanied by the traditional tajaraste, will proceed to the church of Santa Ana, where a second mass will be conducted.
Afterwards, the image of San Roque will be transferred to the old dock in Garachico, the starting point of the customary pilgrimage.
Taking the bus is recommended for the Garachico pilgrimage
Anticipating a high volume of visitors, Tenerife Intercity Transport (TITSA) has opted to enhance the service on line 363. This enhancement will commence at 9:00 a.m. and will adjust to the needs of passengers throughout the day, with an additional 5,000 seats added.
The buses will continue operating until the final special service from Garachico, connecting to Puerto de la Cruz and Buenavista.
To prevent potential traffic congestion, the TF-42 road will be inaccessible to private vehicles between kilometres 0 and 7.8. This measure is aimed at facilitating smoother traffic flow for public transport and commercial vehicles, thus ensuring quicker journeys for those opting to utilise the bus service.
Throughout the day, all stops in the Garachico town centre will be non-operational from 9:00 to 23:00, relocating to a designated stop on the esplanade adjacent to the former football field.
TITSA has allocated all necessary resources to cater to the demand during the festivity, and passengers can access additional information regarding schedules and routes on the company’s official website, via their helpline, or across their social media channels.
