SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, 12 Aug. (EUROPA PRESS) –
The 2nd Conference on Aromatic Malvasia will take place on Sunday 18 August, starting from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., at the San Antonio Volcano Sky Interpretation Centre in Fuencaliente, La Palma.
This event has been organised by the Government of the Canary Islands, in partnership with the Canary Islands Institute for Agri-Food Quality (ICCA), the City Council of Fuencaliente, the Cabildo of La Palma, and Bodegas Teneguía.
The conference will focus on the current status of the wine industry on the island, with a particular emphasis on the aromatic Malvasia variety, which is highly regarded for its agricultural and oenological qualities.
Viticulture, a key sector in the economic landscape of La Palma, has faced challenges in recent years due to factors such as generational succession issues, mechanization difficulties, small-scale farming practices, and prolonged droughts. This conference aims to serve as a platform for discussing the challenges and solutions within the local wine sector, specifically concerning the cultivation of Malvasia grapes.
In addition to examining the production framework of the sector on the island, particularly in Fuencaliente, the event will explore conservation methods for this grape variety through sustainable practices to combat climate change and promote biodiversity in vineyards.
The conference will also delve into global market trends in the wine sector to develop a promotional strategy for the unique aromatic Malvasia brand.
Following the official welcome, the presenter Pedro Piqueras will kick off the day, which includes four presentations moderated by journalist Pedro Montesinos.
The agenda includes a presentation by volcanologist Nemesio Pérez on the significance of ‘terroir’ in enhancing the quality of Malvasia from Los Llanos Negros, focusing on the soil’s physical and chemical attributes in grape quality.
This will be followed by an in-depth discussion on Vineyard Management for Adapting to a Changing Climate by agricultural engineer and oenologist Julio Prieto, highlighting successful vineyard management techniques in extreme weather conditions, particularly pruning methods to address water stress and other strategies to manage heatwaves and water scarcity.
Subsequently, oenologist Paco del Castillo will talk about Naturally Sweet Wines and Malvasias from Fuencaliente: Timeless Classics, discussing the unique features of naturally sweet wines and the significance of different Malvasia types in the global market.
To wrap up, agricultural engineer and wine sector expert Pedro Ballesteros will explore The Essence of Wine in Saturated Markets, underlining the importance of differentiation and identity as market strategies for premium wine-producing regions like La Palma, with examples from various wine regions worldwide.
