SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, 6 August (EUROPA PRESS) –
The Tenerife Symphony Orchestra, in collaboration with the University of La Laguna and the DISA Foundation, has announced the launch of a new series of concerts: ‘A fULL con la Sinfónica’, which aims to bring classical music closer to the university community and the general public of La Laguna through a series of three concerts that will take place between September 2024 and May 2025.
‘A fULL con la Sinfónica’ will feature a variety of hosts who will guide the audience on a journey through great symphonic music. Each concert will feature leading conductors (Víctor Pablo Pérez, Shiyeon Sung and Johanna Malangré) and presenters (Lamine Thior, Sara Rubayo and Gonzalo Lahoz), who will bring their unique knowledge and perspectives to the Auditorium of the University of La Laguna.
According to José Carlos Acha, island councillor for Culture and president of the Island Music Board, this project responds to “the relevance of classical music for the young university population and to the Tenerife Symphony’s vocation to serve the entire island.”
Sara Mateos, director of the DISA Foundation, has expressed her pride in being part of this initiative: “Bringing the arts and culture closer is one of our main objectives. Projects like this allow us to discover new leisure options that can translate, in the short term, into new audiences for symphonic music on our islands.”
For her part, the Vice-Rector for Culture and University Outreach, Isabel León, pointed out the timeliness of this initiative “to stimulate the awakening of young people to musical culture and to democratize access to classical music in the university setting, extending it to the whole of society.”
DATES AND PROGRAMMING.
The ‘A fULL con la Sinfónica’ concert series will offer three outstanding performances during the 2024/25 season, each with a format of around 70 minutes and the presence of renowned hosts who will guide the audience through symphonic music. The first appointment will be on Thursday, 19 September 2024 at 8:00 p.m. with the presentation of ‘Porgy and Bess’. Lamine Thior, an actor and comedian known for his activism against racism, will be the host of the evening. The direction will be in the hands of Víctor Pablo Pérez, honorary director of the Tenerife Symphony.
The programme will begin with a tribute to John Williams’ film scores, entitled ‘Tribute to the Film Composer John Williams’, followed by Gershwin’s masterpiece, ‘Porgy and Bess’, arranged by R. Bennet. This last piece is a powerful reflection of the racial struggle in America in the 1930s.
The second evening, scheduled for Thursday, 20 February 2025 at 8:00 p.m., will be dedicated to Dvorák’s Seventh. Sara Rubayo, an art historian and popularizer known as La Gata Verde on YouTube, will be the host. The musical direction will be in the hands of the outstanding Korean conductor Shiyeon Sung.
The programme includes Wagner’s Prelude and Death from Tristan und Isolde, a piece that revolutionised classical music, and Dvorák’s Seventh Symphony in D minor, Op. 70, a work that combines poignant melodies with a robust symphonic structure.
The cycle will culminate on Thursday, 8 May 2025 at 8:00 p.m. with a performance of Schubert’s ‘La Grande’. The music popularizer Gonzalo Lahoz will be the host of this special evening, which will be directed by the talented German conductor Johanna Malangré.
The programme will begin with Las constelaciones que más luminosa, a recent work by Raquel García-Tomás, inspired by an illustration by the artist Pere Ginard. The main piece of the evening will be the monumental Symphony No. 9 in C major ‘La Grande’ by Schubert, a work renowned for its majestic scale and profound expressiveness.
