SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, 6th August (EUROPA PRESS) –

The average temperature in the Canary Islands this past July was 23.2 degrees, marking a positive deviation of +0.9 degrees and indicating a notably warm month, ranking as the tenth warmest since 1961.

In terms of rainfall, an average of 2.2 mm was recorded, which is 244% of the expected value, making it a particularly rainy month based on the 1991-2020 reference series and ranking as the fifth wettest since 1961.

According to the Climatological Forecast of the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet), July was warmer in the province of Las Palmas, with an average temperature of 23.9 degrees (+0.9 ºC), and slightly cooler in the province of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, with an average temperature of 22.3 degrees (+1.0 ºC).

Throughout the previous month, there were 1,246 tropical nights registered across the Canary Islands, with 34 percent (423) occurring in Gran Canaria and 31.3 percent in Tenerife. In comparison to July 2023, this year saw around 500 more tropical nights than the previous year, which recorded 1,745.

July saw three warm episodes in the Canary Islands, although they did not qualify as heatwaves. The most intense was from the 23rd to the 27th, with the 25th being the warmest day of the month, reaching highs of 38.8 degrees in Tenerife, followed by the 19th with highs of 42.9 degrees in Gran Canaria.

RAINFALL

While rainfall levels were above average for July in the Canary Islands, they were relatively light and sporadic. Most of the rainfall was concentrated at the beginning and end of the month, particularly until the 10th and from the 26th onwards. This was caused by humid air masses carried by the trade winds, affecting the northern slopes of the islands with higher relief.

The highest rainfall records were in the western islands, with an average of 3.5 mm recorded, which is 219 percent of the expected value. In the eastern islands, the highest monthly record was in Teror (Osorio, Gran Canaria) with 5.2 mm and seven days of significant rainfall.

The maximum daily rainfall in the Las Palmas province was also recorded at the aforementioned station, as well as at the Valleseco station (Gran Canaria), with 2.4 mm on the 28th.
