The government of La Palma, through the La Palma Film Commission programme of Sodepal, is organising various workshops to enhance professionalism in the film industry on the island. Renowned figures from the film industry, such as Patricia Font, a screenwriter and director who won a Goya award in 2015 for the best short film ‘Un café para llevar’ and was nominated for five Goya Awards in 2023 for ‘El Maestro que promesa el Mar’, are participating in these workshops.
Approximately one hundred people gathered at Teatro Cine Chico to attend an acting workshop conducted by the Catalan director, writer, and scriptwriter. Sergio Rodríguez, the president of the government, emphasised the significant potential of La Palma to host such productions: “Promoting the image of La Palma in the audiovisual sector is a valuable source of income and contributes to job creation.”
The Minister for Economic Promotion and head of Sodepal, Miriam Perestelo, highlighted the opportunity for La Palma to establish itself as a national reference for the filming of cinema projects due to the island’s “natural and unique landscapes”. She mentioned that the training activities have a strong practical element, aimed at providing students with real-life scenarios they may encounter in various departments of audiovisual production.
Other workshops that have taken place include the ‘Location Manager and Location Manager’ workshop. Yanira de Armas, an experienced professional who has worked as a location manager on films like ‘Wonder Woman’ and ‘Jason Bourne’, conducted this workshop.
There will also be a ‘Film Script Writing Workshop’ led by director and screenwriter Mercedes Afonso from La Palma, scheduled from 19 to 23 August. Participants can also participate in workshops on costumes for film, television, and advertising, as well as courses on character makeup and silicone prosthetics.
A workshop on sustainable productions, conducted by Mrs. Greenfilm, who has worked on major platforms like Netflix in the field of filming services, will also be offered. Registration is available on the official website of La Palma Film Commission: https://lapalmafilmcommission.com/formacion/.
