Podemos Canarias Turns the Tables: Rejects Political Shift by Passing Puerto de la Cruz Mayorship to PP

We canary islands has rejected the motion of censure presented by Asamblea Ciudadana Portuense (ACP), along with PP and CC, at Puerto de la Cruz City Hall on Thursday in an attempt to take over the Mayor’s Office from the PSOE, with whom ACP has been governing until now.

We canary islands points out that it has been part of the electoral coalition of ACP, along with other left-wing political forces and residents of Puerto de la Cruz, in the past electoral appointments. It believes that overall, this collaboration has been positive in driving political change in the Port, pushing the PP into the opposition. Since 2019, it has been part of the municipal government in coalition with the PSOE. Therefore, We canary islands acknowledges the challenging relationship with the governing partner, which has posed significant obstacles in managing the municipal government under ACP.

Nevertheless, the party asserts that “this situation does not justify in any way the return of the Popular Party to municipal government, much less forming a coalition government with the right-wing.”

We canary islands explains that it was not consulted about the decision to dissolve the government and sees a potential motion of censure as crossing a red line that distorts the will of the popular vote in the northern municipality.

If the joint government with the PSOE is no longer viable, We canary islands believes that an internal discussion should be initiated to transition to the opposition and construct the progressive alternative needed by Puerto de la Cruz from the streets and institutions, which the current PSOE fails to represent.

We canary islands, as a member of the electoral coalition, opposes this “political change” that goes against the interests of the residents of Puerto de la Cruz and the social majority of the Canary Islands.
