The Royal Family, including King Felipe and Queen Letizia, expressed their condolences on July 11 for the passing of Pastor Nicomedes Carballo Fariña, the last goatherd of the Arafo mountains. Mayor Juan Ramón Martín presented a telegram from Their Majesties to Carballo’s family.
During the visit, Mayor Martín also shared details about a sculpture project dedicated to Nicomedes, which will be showcased in Arafo soon. The collaboration of the Cabildo de Tenerife, specifically through the Environmental department led by councillor Blanca Pérez Delgado, will make this project a reality.
Additionally, it was announced that La Cruz square will be renamed Nicomedes Carballo Fariña square in honour of his memory. This renaming will coincide with the start of the San Agustín Pilgrimage on August 24, a fitting tribute to his legacy according to Mayor Martín.
