Petition Against Extension of Tram Line 2 in Santa Cruz de Tenerife

The Civic Front of the Southwest district of Santa Cruz de Tenerife has submitted over 3,300 signatures to the Island Council opposing the planned extension of tram Line 2. The proposed route would run from Tíncer to Muñeco de Nieve, passing through Avenida de Los Majuelos as a gateway for its future extension to the La Gallega neighbourhood.

Local residents’ associations, social organisations, and businesses have collected signatures in recent months to express their disapproval of the changes to Line 2. They argue that the tram’s passage through Avenida de los Majuelos would negatively impact the area’s infrastructure, limiting its use and recreational value as a vital community hub.

The petition, spanning 352 pages, calls for a reconsideration of alternative routes or the preservation of the original plan. They vehemently oppose the use of Avenida de Los Majuelos, citing the detrimental effects it would have on the neighbourhood’s amenities and community spaces compared to other affected areas like La Rambla or Avenida de Los Príncipes.

Despite claims by political leaders that the route had overwhelming support, the presentation of over 3,000 signatures contradicts this. The Civic Front criticises Coalición Canaria for pushing forward with the project despite lack of consensus, accusing them of disregarding residents’ opinions and manipulating data to justify their plans.

Having previously gathered more than 8,000 signatures against the initiative, the Civic Front urges authorities to reconsider the proposed route, highlighting more suitable alternatives for the district.
