The local government of Santa Cruz is moving forward with its plans to establish a Low Emission Zone (LEZ) in compliance with European regulations for cities with populations exceeding 50,000. This week, trials will commence to assess the charging capabilities and passenger capacity of 11 newly acquired 100% electric buses. These buses will be integrated into the service of line 920, which serves an average of around 1,500 passengers daily.
Mayor José Manuel Bermúdez highlighted that these buses were purchased with a subsidy of almost 2.2 million euros from the Next Generation fund. When combined with municipal funds amounting to approximately 3.3 million euros, the purchase was made possible. The buses are currently undergoing testing to be put into operation pending approval from technicians.
Bermúdez emphasised, “This is the strategic plan we have been implementing to enhance public transportation in the city, simultaneously upgrading the fleet to a more efficient and sustainable one.” He noted that “the city council allocates over 13 million euros annually to urban passenger transport, making it the second largest budget item after street cleaning and waste management.”
Line 920 covers a route that includes Interchange, José Manuel Guimerá Avenue, San Sebastián Avenue, Bravo Murillo Avenue, Plaza España, La Marina Street, Rambla Santa Cruz, Asuncionistas Avenue, Reyes Católicos, Benito Pérez Armas Avenue, Tres de Mayo Avenue, and Interchange.
Mobility Councillor Evelyn Alonso stated that the trials commencing this week are a precursor to launching the 100% electric buses. She indicated that with these buses, the energy balance within the fleet will be improved, promoting zero-emission operations and enhancing system accessibility.
“The sustainable, safe, and spacious electric buses with their appealing design will encourage the public to opt for public transportation, allowing them to reach their destinations in an eco-friendly and quiet manner,” added Alonso.
