SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, 24th Jul. (EUROPA PRESS) –
Inaugurating the Day of International Cooperation, the Noble Hall of the Cabildo de Tenerife was the setting for the celebration, part of the Campus África 2024 programme led by the vice president and Tourism councillor of the island Corporation, Lope Afonso.
Lope Afonso emphasised that the Cabildo is “fulfilling its commitments to society. Through strategic alliances, we aim to achieve the set objectives dedicated to enhancing the quality of life in neighbouring countries. We are actively promoting international cooperation for development.”
She further added that the promotion of international development cooperation poses a “challenging yet crucial task. We are confronted with significant challenges, however, there are vast opportunities to transform our world into a better place for all. Collaborative efforts, dedication, and collective actions are paramount to achieving our goals and constructing a more prosperous and just future,” she stated.
In addition, the island’s Director of Foreign Action and Institutional Relations, Pedro González, mentioned that Campus África “continues to provide resources for African university graduates to receive proper training and contribute to the growth and development of their respective nations.”
González highlighted that the Foreign Affairs Department of the Council will continue to endorse such initiatives as the most fitting approach to cooperate with the African countries in our vicinity.
The event was attended by Campus África co-director and President of the Canary Foundation for the Control of Tropical Diseases (Funccet), Basilio Valladares; the Rector of the University of La Laguna, Francisco Javier García; Campus África co-director, José Gómez Soliño; multiple councillors of the Cabildo, along with scholarship students from various African countries including Morocco, Tunisia, Cape Verde, Senegal, Gabon, and Cameroon.
During the event, Professor of Parasitology and Emeritus Professor of the University of Valencia, leading expert and Spanish representative of the WHO, former President of the International Federation of Tropical Medicine, Santiago Mas-Coma, delivered a lecture titled “Cooperation and Health”.
The sixth edition of Campus Africa will continue until Friday 26th July, concentrating on the environmental, cultural, and global health challenges confronting the island territories of the African Atlantic. Emphasising the empowering potential of science, and following a decade where over three hundred African university students have been trained, this international university cooperation programme has significantly raised the number of African scholarship recipients in its tenth anniversary edition, surpassing one hundred in this session.
