SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, 24 Jul. (EUROPA PRESS) –
The President of the Canary Islands, Fernando Clavijo, expressed his disappointment today, Wednesday, during the Government’s control session, about the rejection in the Congress of Deputies of considering the modification of the Immigration Law and acknowledged that he feels “bewildered” by the events in the Lower House yesterday.
Responding to inquiries from various parliamentary groups, Fernando Clavijo wanted to point out that after consultations with all congressional groups, 172 votes were in favour of the reform. He deemed it a “noteworthy achievement” that led to “consensus on an enhanced text” supported by all parties that endorsed the Migration Pact in the Canary Islands, except Vox.
Fernando Clavijo noted that following this support, the only pending task was for the Government to reach an agreement with Junts and the Popular Party on funding, a proposition that “was not included in the final version of the bill” presented in Congress by CC, PSOE, and Sumar.
Clavijo finds it “unexplainable” that there have been no meetings between the Spanish Government and the Popular Party and Junts during this period, which could have led to seeking an agreement resulting in a finalized text.
He further explained that together with the Minister for Social Rights, Candelaria Delgado, they had to hurriedly work on drafting a text at noon to try to achieve an agreement, even suggesting that if there were no assurances of progressing with the consideration, it should be kept on hold. “Hence, I am bewildered by what transpired yesterday,” he reiterated.
