SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, 23 Jul. (EUROPA PRESS) –
The spokesperson for the Parliamentary Group of the Gomera Socialist Group (ASG), Casimiro Curbelo, has called on national political parties this Tuesday to put aside division and come to an agreement to amend the Immigration Law as requested by the Canary Islands, specifically referring to the PSOE and the PP.
After the submission of the bill to amend article 35 of the Immigration Law in the Congress of Deputies, before the vote on its admission to proceedings, Casimiro Curbelo emphasised that the autonomous community “cannot continue like this, as it lacks the resources and facilities to accommodate and care for over 6,000 unaccompanied migrant minors.”
He expressed regret that a problem that “is not political or territorial, but humanitarian” has taken so long to be addressed and called for an “immediate, present action” because, in his words, “we are overwhelmed by frustration, hopelessness, and overcrowding when we witness how the islands are only able to provide the basics and not truly humane care.”
“We are witnessing one of the most dire and illogical situations” he has seen in his long political career, Curbelo stated, deploring the fact that “a humanitarian issue is being exploited for political confrontation and government destabilisation.”
He mentioned the recent meetings aimed at reaching an agreement on this matter, such as the sectoral conferences on Immigration and Childhood and Family, the latter of which had “disappointing outcomes.” He cautioned that “the parliamentary process for the bill will take several months, while the Canary Islands and the minors will continue to suffer.” “Until this path and the proposed regulatory solution are confirmed, we need to brace ourselves for the influx of minors expected in the upcoming months,” he emphasised.
