SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, 22 Jul. (EUROPA PRESS) –
The Secretary General of the PSOE Canarias and Minister of the Government of Spain, Ángel Víctor Torres, emphasized on Monday that the modest salaries of workers are a paramount issue in the Canary Islands currently. Therefore, he has called on the Canarian Coalition and the Popular Party, who form the regional Government, to address this disparity promptly and put forward measures to enhance wealth distribution.
Pointing out that the Canary Islands exhibit the most significant gap in Spain between the affluent and the underprivileged, nearly three times higher than other Spanish regions, Torres stressed the need for immediate action from the current Executive in the Canary Islands. He elucidated, “While there is a 7% difference nationwide between the affluent and the needy, in the case of the Canary Islands, it stands at 26%.”
Torres proposed that President Fernando Clavijo should take the lead by promptly calling for a meeting of the Advisory Council, comprising unions and employers, to spearhead an initiative that would lead to the essential revamping of wage distributions within the Canary Islands. Additionally, he suggested reconceptualizing agreements and fostering consensus to achieve a more equitable wealth distribution.
Extending cooperation to the Government of the Canary Islands in addressing this challenge, Torres also cautioned that the Socialist Party would offer stern opposition if no concrete solution is formulated in due time.
On Monday, Torres convened a meeting in Santa Cruz de Tenerife with representatives from the two primary unions, accompanied by Nira Fierro, the Secretary of Organisation and President of the Parliamentary Group, Socialist deputies Sebastián Franquis and Gustavo Santana, and Antonio Olivera, the Secretary of Public Management and Relations with the Administration within the PSOE Canarias executive.
“Given that the Canary Islands attract numerous tourists – more than 14 million in 2023 – the economy derived from this major revenue source must accordingly be redistributed to foster greater social justice. To progress in this aspect, the Government of the Canary Islands will find our support,” he concluded.
