SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, 22 Jul. (EUROPA PRESS) –
Today, Monday, the Vice President and Tourism Councillor of the Tenerife Island Council, Lope Afonso, visited the final stages of the renovation works at the Gran Hotel Taoro. This historic establishment, located in Puerto de la Cruz and owned by the island corporation, is nearing the end of its refurbishment process.
Lope Afonso expressed his excitement about the imminent reopening of the Gran Hotel Taoro, highlighting that this endeavour signifies a “significant advancement” for the island’s tourism infrastructure. He underlined the hotel’s importance as a publicly-owned asset managed by a private entity.
Afonso stated that the restoration of Taoro “will not only attract high-quality clientele but will also enhance the profitability of tourism in North Tenerife.” He added, “The refurbishment will reintroduce to residents and visitors a space brimming with history and beauty, solidifying its position as a tourism beacon in the Canary Islands.”
The renovation of the Gran Hotel Taoro is envisioned as a project that will preserve the building’s historical essence while incorporating modern elements. This collaborative endeavour involving the Cabildo, Puerto de la Cruz Town Council, and Tropical Turística Canaria aims to restore the hotel to its former glory, offering approximately 200 rooms, various dining venues, and wellness facilities, all designed with an emphasis on environmental sustainability.
According to Lope Afonso, the reopening of the Gran Hotel Taoro presents “an opportunity to breathe new life into the local economy, attract investments to Tenerife, and reinforce the cultural identity of Puerto de la Cruz.”
The Gran Hotel Taoro, established in 1890 as Spain’s first luxury hotel, operated as a casino from 1979 to 2006 before closing its doors in 2006.
Following a competition to renovate and lease the property, Tropical Turística Canaria emerged as the victor. The company has undertaken the task of modernizing the hotel in El Puerto to meet contemporary luxury standards while preserving the building’s historical significance and prestige.
My Way Hotels, a hotel operator under Tropical Turística Canaria, will manage the Gran Hotel Taoro. The refurbishment project involves an investment of nearly 35 million euros, enabling the hotel to feature approximately 200 rooms spread across its four floors. The western wing of the hotel will house three heated pools, a new wellness centre, and several high-quality dining options.
