The Island Council of Tenerife is unveiling the most extensive operation against forest fires in the history of the Canary Islands. Always bearing in mind the destructive fire of last year – the first anniversary falls on August 15 – which scorched 13,000 hectares and impacted twelve municipalities, remains very much at the forefront. To such an extent that the president, Rosa Dávila, and the lieutenant general and head of the Canary Islands Command, Julio Salom, convened this Monday the coordination meeting between the island authority, the State Security forces, and the Army, a key element of the 2024 plan, at Montaña Bermeja. In the heights of La Orotava, one of the areas most severely affected by the fire that started amidst the mountains of Arafo and Candelaria, resulting in the evacuation of 13,000 people, 5,000 of whom were residents of this vicinity.
