The tradition dictates that canonization is a meticulous process that necessitates showcasing a specific image’s longstanding devotion over the years, proving that this image has evoked sincere veneration of the Mother of God through generations.
Valle de Guerra is abuzz with the forthcoming canonization of the Image of Our Lady of the Rosary, set to take place on August 18, 2024. The current priest, Don Julio Ribot Rodríguez, who has overseen the Valle de Guerra church for 14 years, shared insights with DIARIO DE AVISOS regarding this significant historical religious event. The town is eagerly anticipating the participation of various authorities and dignitaries from Tenerife, including the president of the Canary Islands government, the captain general of the Canary Islands, the president of the Cabildo of Tenerife, the bishop of Tenerife, parish priests, musical bands, community associations, media personnel, entrepreneurs, and residents from all corners of the island.
Reflecting on the occasion, he remarked, “The Canonical Coronation of the Image of Our Lady of the Rosary in Valle de Guerra, along with the establishment of the hermitage in her honour since 1615, stands as one of the most significant events in the region’s history. It underscores the profound faith exhibited by the people of Valle de Guerra, preserving their heritage, history, and community identity.”
He further added emotively, “Valle de Guerra’s narrative would be incomplete without the presence of the Patron Saint, embodied in a beautiful image of remarkable artistic merit crafted by one of the Canary Islands’ top three sculptors: José Rodríguez de la Oliva from La Laguna. This young artist conveyed his profound gratitude to his mentor, Don Fernando López de la Guerra, the descendant of the conquistador who endowed this place with its name. The residents, known for their goodness and humility, now reaffirm, through the canonical coronation, the recognition of her status as Queen of the Universe.”
In a visibly moved manner, the Reverend expressed, “This grand event has captured the attention of local and international audiences, garnering interest from various sectors within and beyond the island. The participation of colourful military uniforms from different parts of the island, fraternities, musical bands, the clergy led by the bishop, and civil and military dignitaries will further elevate the ceremony. This marks the culmination of extensive preparatory activities with significant citizen involvement.”
Concluding his remarks, Mr. Julio Ribot Rodríguez stated, “The monumental task ahead of us necessitated the concerted efforts of the Commission, institutions, businesses, and individuals working tirelessly for over a year. Upon successful completion, Valle de Guerra and its inhabitants will rightfully claim their historical position, leaving an enduring legacy of dedication, grace, and integrity, characteristic of those devoted to this noble undertaking.”
