In a recent operation, 49-year-old man from San Miguel de Abona has been arrested by the Civil Guard for causing three forest fires on the island of Tenerife. The intervention took place on July 19 as part of Operation Ramnus, following a thorough investigation involving several specialized units.
The operation, led by the Civil Guard, involved the Nature Protection Service (Seprona) of the Santa Cruz de Tenerife Command and the Central Operative Unit for the Environment (UCOMA), which travelled from Madrid to collaborate in the investigation. These teams worked together to clarify the forest fires recorded on the island since the summer of 2023.
The Civil Guard’s Criminal Behaviour Analysis Section developed a profile of the fires’ author, determining that the likely motivation was of a impulsive or “senseless” nature, characteristic of a pyromaniac’s behaviour. This information was crucial in guiding the investigations to the suspect.
The Civil Guard highlighted the inherent complexity in investigating these types of crimes, which require meticulous evidence collection and detailed analysis. Thanks to these efforts, several forest fires that have affected the Canary Islands in recent years have been clarified.
The collaboration of the Local Police of Vilaflor was also enlisted in this operation. The arrested individual, along with the proceedings, has been handed over to Court Number 1 of Granadilla de Abona, where his legal status will be determined.
Caused Fires
The accused is implicated in one forest fire and two fire starts that occurred in the early hours of August 15, between the towns of Vilaflor and San Miguel de Abona. These incidents have caused great concern in the local community, given the region’s vulnerability to forest fires.
Operation Ramnus has not only led to the suspect’s arrest but also underscores the importance of inter-institutional cooperation in combating environmental crimes. The investigations have shed light on several forest fires in Tenerife, contributing to the safety and protection of the environment on the island.
Context of Forest Fires
Forest fires are a recurring problem in Tenerife, especially during the summer months. The island, with its dry climate and strong winds, is particularly susceptible to these natural disasters. The work of security forces and citizen collaboration are essential to prevent and control these events.
The Civil Guard reminds the public of the importance of reporting any suspicious activity that may be related to forest fires. Furthermore, it is recommended to follow the authorities’ instructions and participate in prevention campaigns and education on proper fire management in forested areas.
