During the night, the Canary Islands experienced unusually high temperatures, with some parts of the archipelago exceeding 30 degrees. The State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) data consulted by Europa Press revealed that since midnight, the islands have been some of the hottest places in the country.
A heatwave has hit the islands, prompting alerts for temperatures as high as 36 degrees in the central areas and southern peaks of Gran Canaria, as well as 34 degrees in the interior of the easternmost islands and the central and southern peaks of the western and southern islands.
According to Aemet, one of the hottest spots in the country this morning was San Bartolomé de Tirajana, Gran Canaria, where temperatures soared to 32.7 degrees at 01.20. Following closely was Agüimes, also in Gran Canaria, which recorded 32.6 degrees at 05.50.
Other notable temperatures were 31.4 degrees in Güímar, Tenerife, at 06:00; 31.2 degrees in Suerte Alta, Agaete (Gran Canaria), at 01:50; and 30.9 degrees in Cuevas del Pinar, San Bartolomé de Tirajana, Gran Canaria, shortly after midnight.
Along with the heatwave, strong winds have swept across the Canary Islands, with gusts reaching nearly 70 km/h. In La Aldea de San Nicolás, Gran Canaria, and Arure, La Gomera, gusts of 68 and 66 km/h were recorded at 02.30. Lanzarote Airport experienced gusts of 65 km/h at 02.10; Agüimes registered 64 km/h at 00.20, and El Pinar, El Hierro, recorded 63 km/h at 05.20.
