The association of taxi operators in the capital, represented by Elite Taxi Tenerife, is organizing a demonstration by the collective of taxi drivers on Friday, 19 July, from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. coinciding with the Cook Music Festival in the city.
The protest, as announced on social media by the organisers, will be held on May 3rd Avenue between the El Corte Inglés and Rotary Club roundabouts, near the municipal swimming pool, and is a response to “the city council’s lack of action in fulfilling the commitment to withdraw licenses.”
According to Elite Taxi, “the hosting of these major concerts and festivals in May and June has not affected us financially, due to the barriers and obstacles created by the city council that hinder our work.”
Despite the approval of the file related to the process for the buy-back of taxi licenses in the municipality for the year 2024, with a budget of 1.433 million Euros, following an agreement between the local council and the Cabildo de Tenerife, to repurchase 38 licenses this year, the association of operators remains steadfast in their protest.
Elite Taxi argues that there is a Strategic Plan to Enhance Taxi Competitiveness and a socio-economic study, both commissioned by the City Council, indicating an oversupply of taxis in the capital, and they urge the council to “stop insisting that there is a shortage of taxis, as this is not the case.”
