The Santa Cruz Harbour was the venue for the inaugural Malpica Awards. These accolades celebrate the dedication of individuals, businesses, institutions, and organisations in the maritime sector who have contributed to ensuring the safety and smooth passage of both people and goods in the Island’s ports. The event took place on the eve of the Day of Carmen: the guardian and patroness of the seas, whose role on the Island is fulfilled by the harbour police. Héctor Díaz, one of the operatives featured in the event’s video presentation, expressed gratitude for the recognition received today, stating “because our efforts are being acknowledged”. The role encompasses tasks that can be summed up with a simple term: “assistance”. The primary aim is to “assist the citizens, be it locals, visitors, or migrants.”
