A transformation is on the horizon for the central promenade of Los Majuelos Avenue in the southwest district of the capital to enhance both its visual appeal and functionality. The Santa Cruz de Tenerife City Council is gearing up for a comprehensive makeover of this pedestrian area. The Local Government Board approved the contract for drafting the rehabilitation project, with a budget of 84,405 euros for 2024, 75,452 euros each for 2025 and 2026, and a total estimated execution cost of 3 million euros.
The project drafting phase will span five months, involving an initial analysis of the current state, surveys, preliminary avenue designs, leading up to the final basic and execution project after the contract formalisation.
Addressing the plans, Mayor of Santa Cruz, José Manuel Bermúdez, expressed, “We are taking the first strides towards a project aimed at enhancing the aesthetics and functionality of the avenue while prioritising pedestrian safety and comfort. Universal accessibility will be ensured along with integrated care features to improve the quality of daily life for everyone by incorporating green spaces, shaded areas with trees, and structures to shield from sunlight, wind, and rain.”
Focusing on pedestrian traffic and leisurely activities, Mayor Bermúdez highlighted that “the intervention will cater to outdoor sports, children’s play areas, and relaxation zones.”
Additionally, Councillor for Infrastructure and the Southwest district, Javier Rivero, outlined, “The project will encompass road and open space designs, setting out the necessary works for the refurbishment and enhancement of the central promenade of Los Majuelos Avenue within the stretch spanning from the junctions with Cruz de Tíncer Avenue to the Sobradillo road (TF-272).”
Rivero emphasised, “The plans include the revamp of Plaza de las Nieves and restoration of the sculpture called the Snowman, crafted by artist Jirí Georg Dokoupil.”
Furthermore, he disclosed, “The project area covers approximately 14,800 square metres, encompassing the central promenade section of Avenida de Los Majuelos, 1,250 metres in length and an estimated 10 metres in width, traversing the roundabout where Plaza de las Nieves is situated.”
“Designs will incorporate renewable energy integration, energy efficiency measures, and considerations for environmental aspects, acoustics, and lighting. Promoting the use of information and communication technologies will be a key focus,” concluded the councillor.
