Approximately fifty individuals, all of whom are not residents of Tenerife (free) or the Canary Islands (3 euros), participated in the inauguration of the new tourist tax or eco-tax system for descending the Masca gorge and departing by sea from the upgraded pier. The cost is 28 euros (14 euros for children), which is converted to 29.90 euros with the IGIC tax at the time of payment. The local residents of the village – numbering around 90 individuals – support the regulation and the proposed fee by the Tenerife Council. Nevertheless, they generally view the fee as “exorbitant”, particularly in comparison to that imposed on Canary Island residents not residing on the Island: 3 euros, 1.5 euros for minors. They also expect more and better services in return for the money collected, as intended. And what about the foreigners? Well, the majority of them are unaware of the situation. Local residents and merchants expressed that there was “a lack of information”, while also acknowledging that “it is only the first day”.
