SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, 13th Jul (EUROPA PRESS) –
The Plenary Session of the Economic and Social Council of the Canary Islands (CES) has unanimously approved a proposal this week regarding the Canary Islands Plan for the Prevention of Childhood Obesity. The proposal emphasises the necessity of developing and implementing specific measures to help lower-income families on the islands decrease the prevalence of this health issue among children, along with other suggestions.
Highlighting the importance of taking further action, Sergio Melián, the president of the CES Social Welfare Policy Commission, mentioned that this advice is being provided following a request from the Presidency of the Government of the Canary Islands.
The official document from the Canarian Executive comprehensively addresses the various aspects concerning the current significant public health problem of childhood obesity, while the Council aims to provide additional insights that could enhance the successful execution and progress of the Plan,” Sergio Melián stated.
In terms of specific recommendations, the CES proposal deems it crucial to enhance the quality of food provided in school menus. This not only involves increased financial investments but also improving food monitoring and control procedures, as well as food preparation methods.
Further reinforcing educational initiatives for all involved parties and implementing targeted measures to enhance obesity prevention in children form the final recommendations presented in this document.
Lastly, Sergio Melián emphasised that the Plan for the Prevention of Childhood Obesity in the Canary Islands “emanates from the extensive collaborative efforts of a multi-disciplinary team comprising highly skilled professionals with vast experience.” “Consequently, they have underscored the urgency of addressing this issue in the islands promptly,” he added.
