During midday last Monday, in the vicinity of the port in Puerto de la Cruz, this publication observed another evident display of xenophobia involving an individual aged between 35 and 45 years. This person, bare-chested and holding a large Tenerife flag in one hand and a beer can in the other, exhibited signs of inebriation. Despite his intoxicated state, he audibly proclaimed, while walking along streets like Mequinez, “Moroccans (and Moors) should leave Puerto de la Cruz.”
With an overtly hostile and provocative demeanour, the individual moved from the port towards Meknes, persisting in his discriminatory remarks. This incident serves as yet another distressing example of racism in a region where, due to the frequent presence of unaccompanied migrant minors (largely non-Moroccans), such hate crimes occasionally occur. However, they are not typically as explicit and vociferous as the actions of this individual, who unabashedly expressed his indifference towards consequences.
This unfortunate scenario illustrates the outcome of endorsing certain narratives, spreading falsehoods, associating migration with violence, and ultimately echoing the rhetoric of the extremist far-right.
