The Business and Professional Circle of Southern Tenerife (CEST) is advocating for “urgent” actions to address the “crisis” facing the courts in the South, particularly in Granadilla de Abona. The business group highlights that this location deals with an overwhelming number of cases on a daily basis, which is “disproportionate” to its limited staff, in facilities that are “completely outdated,” leading to a lack of efficiency in the administration of justice and a conducive working environment.
“The courts in this area are under immense pressure, struggling with a backlog of cases that surpasses their capacity to manage,” explain representatives from the legal sector within the organization, stressing that “the staff is overwhelmed and experiencing both physical and mental health issues due to the demands of their work.”
CEST’s President, Javier Cabrera, points out that this situation has persisted for several years, causing significant frustration among citizens and legal professionals who are demanding immediate actions to resolve it. “The stress related to work and the overall atmosphere prevailing in Granadilla have led to consequences that we are currently facing,” he remarks.
CEST is pushing for the construction of a new building that is suitable for the realities of the South and its judicial district, the establishment of a fifth court, the specialization of courts, and the promotion of mediation, among other measures.
“The situation is critical, as the number of pending cases has surged in recent years, far exceeding the capacity of judicial officials to handle them efficiently.” This scenario is worsened by the lack of human and material resources, creating a cycle of inefficiency and delays,” states this core group of the association.
The Circle warns that the sluggish pace of proceedings in this court directly impacts the lives of citizens: “Individuals involved in legal disputes are forced to wait for months, and sometimes even years, to receive a resolution.”
