The City Council of La Laguna reminds everyone that all water celebrations in the region have been cancelled since the declaration of a water emergency in Tenerife. The main objective is to conserve the available resources and raise awareness among the population about the importance of responsible usage in the global context of insufficient rainfall affecting the entire Canary Islands.
The councillor in charge of Festivities at the City Council, Dailos González, expressed regret over having to make this decision, “considering the summer weather forecast with high temperatures, which typically leads to increased consumption of this resource among the population.”
“We understand that these water celebrations hold symbolic significance and are popular in various areas of the region. However, we are confident that our residents will comprehend this decision and support it, with the future generations of Laguneros and Laguneras in mind, who will be impacted by the choices we make today,” added the councillor.
On the other hand, the Water Councillor, Ángel Chinea, highlighted that “last year, we had to implement conservation and mitigation measures within our responsibilities, such as restrictions on sports facilities and public irrigation areas, or the use of reclaimed water for construction activities, street cleaning, and sewerage network maintenance.”
Chinea also mentioned that the Teidagua company is concentrating its efforts on reducing any losses in the supply network and on developing new water resources. Significant advancements are being made in this area, such as the ongoing works at the Punta del Hidalgo treatment plant, which can currently produce 60% of regenerated water for agricultural purposes. The target is for this plant to operate at full capacity by the end of this year, providing relief to coastal production and substantial savings in overall consumption.
Lastly, the La Laguna City Council stresses the importance of implementing energy-saving practices at home to contribute collectively towards this common objective. These suggestions include opting for a five-minute shower each day instead of a bath (saving up to 400 litres per week) or always ensuring to turn off the tap while shaving or brushing teeth.
It is also advised to choose automatic car washes for vehicle cleaning or to fit water-saving devices on all household taps, which can significantly reduce consumption.
