Domínguez urges for “legislation to redirect” minors as Fierro advises him to “take notes” from Ceuta’s president

SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, 9 Jul. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The Deputy President of the Government of the Canary Islands and Leader of the regional PP, Manuel Domínguez, has given his support today to the initial agreement to reform the immigration law and emphasised the importance of “enacting laws to enable the redirection of” migrant minors.

Domínguez made these remarks in response to the Socialist Group President, Nira Fierro, during the parliamentary control session, who criticised the Popular Party for using “excuses” to avoid backing the legislative reform and recommended that the deputy president should “take lessons” from Juan Jesús Vivas, the president of Ceuta, who has called for “solidarity” with the regions.

In a symbolic gesture, the vice president admitted to voting in favour while also mocking his ability to persuade the national PP on what they should do and say. “I greatly appreciate your evaluation of me,” he stated.

He pointed out the previous use of the Navy in past crises involving the dinghies and affirmed that the regional government has not deviated “even a bit” from the agreement to make mandatory the relocation of migrant minors, asserting that it is an agreement accepted “by all,” including the Canarian PP.

Fierro expressed regret that the PP is creating obstacles hindering assistance to the Canary Islands and the whole country in the distribution of migrant minors, presenting a “series of absurd ideas” over the last month, culminating in the suggestion by the party’s spokesperson in Congress, Miguel Tellado, to deploy the Navy to prevent the departure of dinghies.

He sarcastically remarked that the only thing missing was involving the Pope in the issue, after also calling for a Conference of Presidents, funding, or intervention from the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen.

“When did we shift focus from discussing children and teenagers to discussing the Navy?” he questioned, as instead of distancing themselves from Tellado’s statement, some deputies supported his remarks. “You have been silent for the past four days,” he reprimanded.

Fierro criticised the PP’s “migration short-sightedness” and reminded the vice president that the Canarian Government does not have voting rights in Congress.
