Five men apprehended by Local Police in Santa Cruz de Tenerife in a single day for gender-based offences

In Santa Cruz de Tenerife, the Local Police have detained five men on Sunday for gender-based crimes and violating restraining orders, as reported in a statement released by the police force on Monday.

The initial incident, according to the local police, took place around 3:30 p.m. on Avenida de Los Majuelos, where officers were informed about a man assaulting and threatening a woman.

Responding to the situation, the local police went to a bar in the vicinity after hearing from witnesses that the assault occurred outside the bar and the victim had sought refuge inside the establishment.

Consequently, a 39-year-old man identified as JAHS was apprehended. He had forcibly taken a mobile phone from his 37-year-old partner on the street, in addition to shaking and pushing her.

It was confirmed by the officers that the victim tried to seek help and shelter in a nearby bar, but the man dragged her out, causing several injuries.

Following separate interviews with the detained man and the woman, as well as statements from multiple witnesses corroborating the assault, the arrest was carried out.

“The officers provided the woman with all necessary information, and she, accompanied by a friend, went to a healthcare facility and expressed her intention to file a formal report on the incident later,” the statement further explained.

The second intervention occurred at a residence close to the Nuestra Señora de África market when, around 4:00 p.m., a woman reported that her former partner was attempting to enter her home and threatening her life.

The detained individual, identified as VMC and aged 46, had gained access to the building where the 40-year-old woman resides, but she managed to prevent him from entering her home.

Although the man fled the building, he was located in a nearby square by a police patrol with the information gathered and arrested.

A third incident started when a fire was reported at a private residence in the Villa Benítez area, prompting a police patrol to respond and attempt to contain the fire until personnel from the Tenerife Fire Brigade Consortium arrived.

After identifying the occupant of the house, a 57-year-old man, the police spoke with his mother, who revealed that she had left the house a few days earlier due to threats and violence from her son. He had even threatened to set the house on fire.

Providing matching testimonies, the daughter and wife of the identified man led to his arrest, and he was handed over to the court.

The fourth incident took place approximately 8:50 p.m. at a residence near the Somosierra neighbourhood, where officers were alerted to another suspected case of gender violence.

Upon arrival at the scene, the victim, a 28-year-old woman, was interviewed on the street. She mentioned that upon reaching her residence, her partner, who was later apprehended, blocked her entry, engaged in an argument, hurled insults, and physically assaulted her. The detained individual, identified as LFLH, aged 53, put up resistance during the arrest.

The victim sought assistance from a family member and visited a healthcare facility with the intention of reporting the assault at a later time.

The most recent incident occurred in a dwelling in the El Tablero neighbourhood, where at approximately 9:45 p.m., a notification was received regarding a 40-year-old man, known as MCB, who had threatened to end the life of his 48-year-old partner.

Managing to exit the premises, the woman witnessed the man causing destruction to property, furniture, and other items inside the house, mentioning that this wasn’t the first instance of such mistreatment.

Despite the man putting up resistance during the arrest, he eventually complied with the officers and was escorted to the police station.

“While the woman did not require medical attention, she was provided with all the necessary information to proceed with the formal reporting of the incident, along with guidance on available support services,” added the authorities.

Additionally, around 11:30 p.m., multiple local law enforcement officers conducted a traffic stop on Simón Bolívar Street in the capital city of Tenerife due to issues with the vehicle’s lighting system.

Upon routine verification of his documentation, it was uncovered that the driver did not possess a valid Spanish driver’s license, and there was a female passenger in the vehicle, who was also identified.

“Following the mandatory data crosscheck, it was relayed by the Local Police control room that the man was subject to a restraining order preventing contact with the woman accompanying him in the car, leading to the relevant authorities being notified,” the statement concluded.
