SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, 8th Jul. (EUROPA PRESS) –
The Councillor in charge of Citizens’ Safety and Emergencies at the City Hall of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Gladis de León, has issued a decree on Monday to shut down the access to Benijo beach due to minor landslides that have been observed in the recent weeks.
This precautionary step will also include ongoing monitoring of the situation, with several technical assessments being requested to evaluate both the risk posed by this slope and the necessary steps to be taken. The City Council’s Infrastructure department is currently expediting the initial technical measures to address this issue.
In the last few days, minor material collapses have been noted, indicating potential instability in certain areas of the slope overlooking the beach.
These alerts, flagged by the Spanish Red Cross personnel supervising rescue and lifeguard duties in the region, prompted the City Council to make this choice. While the circumstances do not seem grave presently, it is vital to conduct thorough studies and implement essential precautionary actions.
Furthermore, this hazard will be clearly marked in the beach access zone to notify all passers-by of this scenario. Safety and emergency staff, stationed in the Anaga mountain range, will also undertake these informational duties for the public, stressing the importance of everyone’s accountability in avoiding unwarranted risks.
