Announced by the Council yesterday, preparations have commenced for the upcoming pilgrimage to Candelaria in honour of the Virgin on August 15, which is expected to bring together over 100,000 individuals.
Blanca Pérez, the Minister in charge of Environment, Sustainability, Security, and Emergencies, expressed that efforts are being made to “organise an operation to address potential contingencies, considering the flow of people along the routes and roads.” She also highlighted the significant fire incident from the previous year, stating the importance of ensuring the safety of the paths, roads leading to Candelaria, as well as transportation.
COOPERATION
Security and Emergencies Director of the island, Iván Martín, stressed the essential nature of such meetings in guaranteeing security during the pilgrimage to Candelaria by coordinating and preparing all available resources effectively.
“The planning includes assessing the current conditions of trails and paths, safety protocols for hikers to adhere to, and coordination with security and emergency services, as well as checkpoints. This encompasses all logistical requirements based on defined itineraries, routes, supply locations, and transportation,” he elaborated.
Additionally, Cabildo’s Director of Natural Environment, Pedro Millán, confirmed that the evaluation to inspect the condition of paths and roads is already in progress. “Once we have the assessment, we can establish the necessary protocol,” he added.
