A “supposed theft” of a Rolex has only raised more questions about the case of Jay Slater, the young man missing in Tenerife since June 17. Investigator Mark Williams-Thomas stated that the 19-year-old Briton “fled in fear after admitting to stealing a Rolex worth 14,000 Euros“. As revealed by the British publication The Sun, the watch’s owner was a man from Eastern Europe who had reported the theft of his Rolex.

One of Jay’s friends who flew to Tenerife after his disappearance told investigators that the alleged theft could be connected to his disappearance.

Police have been investigating a brawl outside the Papagayo Beach Club in Tenerife shortly after closing the night before the disappearance. “It is understood that a fight broke out after a man from Eastern Europe claimed his Rolex had been stolen,” as reported by the police report cited by The Daily Mail.

Update: With so much speculation and inaccurate information and reporting – here is an update on our investigation into Jay Slater’s disappearance. Please listen carefully to my overview. We have had full access to witnesses and our investigation is evidence based and remains… pic.com/RuF47DIvTi

Former detective Mark Williams-Thomas revealed in an eight-minute video posted by Jay on Snapchat the night before his disappearance. The young man confessed to stealing a Rolex worth £12,000 –roughly 14,000 Euros in exchange– from an “unknown individual”.

Following this, the missing individual travelled to the village of Masca – where he was staying – with two men, after spending the night at a club in Playa de las Américas. During the journey, according to Mark, Jay admitted to his friends on social media that he had taken the watch.

Although the former detective claims that neither he nor his team have been able to verify the theft report, Jay’s friends insist that “he wouldn’t make it up and that the watch was a topic of conversation they had.”

Jay was last seen at 8:00 on June 17 by the owner of the Airbnb, who said he asked when the next bus to Los Cristianos was leaving. He decided to walk back to his accommodation, facing an 11-hour hike.
