El Fraile, located in Arona, is currently facing a significant surge in rubbish and waste accumulation, causing traffic congestion and environmental degradation, as reported by concerned residents. The outcry arose following numerous complaints to the local authorities, urging immediate action to clean up the contaminated area and restore its beauty.
In the vicinity of the beach, where various coastal vegetation thrives, a distressing mix of litter such as bags, bottles, mattresses, chairs, and clothing is tarnishing the landscape.
Expressing unease about the escalating waste issue in El Fraile is Enrique Coello, a resident deeply troubled by the situation. He notes that the beach and its surroundings have been plagued by waste accumulation over the years due to temporary settlements. “Playa de los Enojados is a hotspot attracting many visitors, leading to increased settlements and waste disposal,” he notes with dismay.
Coello points out a noticeable deterioration in the past three to four years, particularly in the town’s centre and adjacent areas, where inadequate street sweeping services have allowed rubbish to accumulate uncontrollably. “The town centre is surrounded by heaps of waste,” he adds.
Concurrently, a neighbourhood group named Limpiamos El Fraile was established a few months ago by affected residents to tackle the problem. Every Saturday, these volunteers gather at the Las Galletas health centre to organize waste collection efforts and allocate cleaning tasks.
“Determined to Enhance Cleaning Services”
Clara Pérez, the councillor responsible for Sustainability, affirmed, “We are diligently working to enhance cleaning services in Arona.” She also mentioned the likelihood of allocating additional funding for more street sweepers to address the situation in El Fraile.
Addressing coastal concerns, Pérez clarified, “Enojados beach is not a designated bathing spot with permanent lifeguards, but it receives regular cleaning services two to three times a week as needed.” She noted the area’s popularity among campers and homeless individuals, necessitating interventions from the Civil Guard and coastal personnel due to various incidents.
Despite the challenges, Pérez underscored the “remarkable potential of this coastal area” and expressed efforts to find sustainable solutions to preserve the environment in collaboration with Las Galletas.
