The Tenerife Island Council will build a new drinking water reservoir in Las Zocas and a recycling centre in Las Chafiras, involving an investment of approximately 2.4 million Euros for the municipality of San Miguel.
The construction cost of the Las Zocas reservoir amounts to around 1.7 million Euros, with a 12-month execution period, aiming to ensure water supply to areas in the southern part of the locality such as La Aldea, Llano del Camello, Las Chafiras, Guargacho, Amarilla Golf and Golf del Sur.
On the other hand, the Las Chafiras recycling centre represents an investment of approximately 717,000 Euros funded by the European Next Generation funds and will enhance recycling and selective waste collection in that area of the island.
The insular councillor for Natural Environment, Sustainability and Safety and Emergencies, Blanca Pérez, and the mayor of San Miguel, Arturo González, held a meeting yesterday in the municipality of San Miguel. Also in attendance were the insular Waste director, Alejandro Molowny, and the manager of the Tenerife Island Water Board (CIATF), Javier Davara.

Blanca Pérez stated that “it is urgent to address the construction of a new drinking water reservoir to replace the one in Las Zocas.” She pointed out that “the current storage facility has losses that need to be addressed to ensure supply to the coastal areas of San Miguel.” She emphasised: “The future reservoir will have the capacity to store 5,000 cubic meters, ensuring a large reserve of drinking water for the supply to the different population centres in the lower part of the municipality. In addition, it will receive contributions of high-quality desalinated water, avoiding the continued consumption of groundwater.”
Industrial Zone

Regarding the new recycling centre, in an industrial zone, Pérez assured: “The Las Chafiras Industrial Estate recycling centre is another milestone in the project to complete a network of these infrastructures that allow and facilitate residents of the municipality, and the region in general, to dispose of their municipal waste.” She concluded: “We currently have eight centres and another eight will be added to the network, which will be a key factor in increasing selective waste collection on the island.”

On his part, the mayor of San Miguel de Abona, Arturo González, highlighted “the fact that the Island Council is taking on the funding of the new Las Zocas reservoir, as this infrastructure will allow us to improve and guarantee supply to the lower parts of the municipality.” Regarding the new recycling centre, González stated that “it will be located in a strategic enclave such as the Las Chafiras Industrial Estate, where citizens can freely dispose of some fractions of municipal waste.”
