SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, 1st July (EUROPA PRESS) –
The Minister for Territorial Policy and Democratic Memory, Ángel Víctor Torres, declared today that Gran Canaria will be one of the locations for the 2030 World Cup to be hosted in Spain, Portugal, and Morocco.
“An excellent achievement has been made,” he stated in an interview on the ‘Buenos Días Canarias’ programme on Televisión Canaria, as reported by Europa Press. He voiced his support for the candidacy promoted by the Cabildo and regarded it as one of the top eight proposals.
The minister highlighted that during the previous term, when he presided over the Canary Islands, they proposed a main venue for the islands, not a subsidiary one. Ultimately, between Gran Canaria and Tenerife, the former was selected, in anticipation of the future new stadium.
Torres expressed that this selection “is the headline of the decade,” as it will elevate the island and the archipelago “onto the world football scene,” leading to the development of “cutting-edge infrastructure, enhancements in connectivity, and a 21st-century stadium.”
He also anticipated that with the “outstanding football” Spain is showcasing in the Euro Cup, they will enter this World Cup as one of the favourites.
